Big Tech plans $325 billion investment

Tech giants Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet plan to invest a record $325 billion in 2025 to develop their AI infrastructure. This represents a 46% increase from an estimated $223 billion in 2024.

Despite the expected long-term benefits, these massive investments raise questions among investors who are unsure whether spending on AI will actually pay off.

Growing uncertainty and competition

One of the main causes of investor mistrust is uncertainty about when and how AI investments will deliver the expected returns. Recent events surrounding Chinese startup DeepSeek, which introduced open-source AI models competitive with those of OpenAI at a fraction of the price, have caused considerable nervousness in the market. Shares of tech companies plummeted as investors began to question the need for huge investments in AI infrastructure.

Still, tech companies are standing by their plans and are not going to slack off on spending. Amazon $AMZNremains the largest investor in this segment , with $78 billion invested in 2024, exceeding the amounts of Microsoft $MSFT ($56 billion) and Alphabet $GOOG ($53 billion). According to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, AI is the biggest business opportunity since the internet.

Plans for 2025

Amazon expects its total investment in 2025 to reach about $105 billion, most of which will go toward AI infrastructure for its AWS cloud service.

Meta $META, led by Mark Zuckerberg, plans to increase investment to $60-65 billion, a substantial increase from the original estimate of $38-40 billion. Zuckerberg said the company is investing "hundreds of billions of dollars" in AI infrastructure over the long term.

Alphabet announced that its capital spending will reach $75 billion in 2025, 30% more than analysts originally expected.

Microsoft, which invested $56 billion in 2024, expects its spending to reach $80 billion in 2025. However, weaker-than-expected AI revenue led to a 6% drop in its stock value.

Question marks over the monetisation of AI

One of the main concerns for investors is how quickly and efficiently AI investments will turn into profits. Meta, for example, has not yet shown clear revenue from AI, but argues that creating a quality user experience is more important than immediate monetization.

Google has said that its cloud-based AI services generate billions of dollars a year, but doesn't give specific numbers. Amazon, while claiming that its AI investments will benefit shareholders in the long term, also did not provide a clear overview of revenue directly from AI.

Microsoft, on the other hand, reported that its AI business segment generated $13 billion in annual revenue and contributed to a 31% year-over-year increase in Azure revenue. However, OpenAI, a key Microsoft partner, reported a loss of $5 billion in 2024 on revenue of $3.7 billion, highlighting the complexity of monetizing AI technologies.

Despite growing investor concerns and the unclear monetization of AI technologies, Wall Street remains optimistic about the outlook for tech giants. Analysts agree that while questions about investment returns remain, there is evidence that tech companies are moving closer to more efficient valuations. This means that despite the uncertainty, investing in AI will continue to be a key strategy for Big Tech.
